# Why Do Avocados Ripen Unevenly After They’re Picked?

Sometimes an avocado stays hard near the stem while the rest turns soft, or it goes from firm to overripe before the whole fruit seems ready. Is uneven ripening mostly about how the fruit was stored, or can it happen because of how it developed on the tree?

I’d also like to know whether keeping avocados together in a bowl changes the timing, and what signs are more reliable than judging ripeness by squeezing them.
