# Why Does My Laptop Show Less Usable RAM Than the Amount Installed?

My laptop has 16 GB of RAM installed, but Windows reports that only about 13.9 GB is usable. I’m not running a memory-heavy app when I check, and the figure is similar after a restart. The BIOS also recognizes the full 16 GB.

Is this kind of gap expected on a laptop, or does it suggest a memory module or configuration problem? I’d also like to know where Windows shows how much memory is reserved for hardware, since that might explain the difference.
