# Why Do Tomatoes Taste Bland After Being Refrigerated?

Tomatoes from the fridge often seem less fragrant and flavorful than the same kind left on the counter. Is that difference mainly about temperature, or does chilling change the tomato in a more lasting way?

I’m curious whether this applies equally to ripe garden tomatoes and firm supermarket ones, and whether taking them back out of the fridge makes any noticeable difference. What storage method has worked best for keeping their flavor?
