# Why Does Windows Ask for a BitLocker Recovery Key After a BIOS Update?

My Windows laptop started asking for a BitLocker recovery key immediately after a BIOS update. The update completed normally, and I haven’t changed the drive or Windows account, so I’m trying to understand what triggered the recovery screen.

Is this usually caused by a change in Secure Boot or the TPM settings, and is there a safe way to prevent it happening after future firmware updates? I’d also like to know what to check before changing BIOS settings, since I don’t want to accidentally make the drive inaccessible.
