# Why Does My Laptop’s USB-C Port Charge Devices but Not Display Video?

I can charge my phone from my laptop’s USB-C port, but connecting a monitor through a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter gives me no picture. The cable and monitor work with another computer, so I’m trying to figure out what I’m missing.

Does charging through a port tell me anything about whether it supports video, or do I need to check for a particular specification such as **USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode**? If you’ve run into this, what details about the laptop or adapter helped you identify the limitation?
