# Why Can Fasting Glucose and A1C Point to Different Blood Sugar Patterns?

I’ve seen cases where a fasting glucose result looks normal, but the A1C is higher than expected—or the reverse. Since the tests describe blood sugar in different ways, how should someone make sense of results that don’t seem to line up?

Could recent illness, anemia, medications, or changes in routine affect one test more than the other? I’m asking about the kinds of context a clinician may consider when reviewing **fasting glucose and A1C** together, not for a diagnosis from a single result.
