# Why Does a Mango Ripen Soft on One Side but Stay Firm on the Other?

I have a mango that has become soft and fragrant near the stem, but the opposite end still feels quite firm. It has been sitting at room temperature, out of direct sunlight. Is this uneven ripening normal, or does it suggest the fruit was damaged or stored poorly?

I’m also curious whether turning the mango occasionally makes any difference, or if the difference in softness is simply part of how some mangoes ripen.
