# Why Do Basketball Teams Intentionally Foul Late in a Close Game?

When a basketball team is behind by a few points near the end, why might it deliberately foul instead of trying to get a clean defensive stop? I understand the basic idea is to stop the clock, but it seems risky if the other team is good at free throws.

How do coaches judge when this tactic gives them a better chance, and does the decision change much depending on the score, time remaining, or which players are on the floor?
