# Why Do Laser-Cut Steel Edges Rust Before the Rest of the Sheet?

We’ve had steel parts where the cut edges show rust before the broad, coated surfaces do, even though the material is stored indoors. It seems to happen more on some batches than others.

Could the cutting process leave an edge condition that makes corrosion start sooner, or is this more likely to come down to the steel grade, coating, or post-cut cleaning? I’d be interested in what manufacturers check first when diagnosing **rust on laser-cut steel edges**.
