# Why Did Hyderabad and Kashmir Take Different Paths After British India Was Partitioned?

I’m trying to understand the princely states at the time of Partition, rather than the provinces that were divided directly. [Hyderabad and Jammu and Kashmir](https://yourviews.mindstick.com/story/2933/hyderabad-vs-jammu-kashmir-cricket-match) both had rulers facing pressure over accession, but their situations and eventual outcomes were very different.

What political or geographic factors best explain those differences? I’m especially interested in how the rulers’ decisions, local populations, and the new governments’ actions shaped what happened after 1947.
