# Why Has Added Stoppage Time Increased in Professional Football?

It feels like some football matches now have considerably more [added time](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/34764/which-country-applied-value-added-tax-vat-for-the-first-time-on-1st-january-2018) than I remember seeing a few seasons ago, even when there haven’t been major injuries. Is this mainly because officials are counting substitutions, goal celebrations, and VAR checks more carefully?

I’m curious whether the change comes from a formal shift in refereeing guidance or just from individual referees applying the existing rules differently. Has the added time actually changed how teams manage the final minutes?
