# Why Does My Laptop Battery Drain While the Laptop Is Shut Down?

My laptop loses a noticeable amount of battery overnight even when I shut it down, rather than leaving it in [sleep mode](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/109132/why-is-my-laptops-touchpad-not-working-after-waking-from-sleep-mode). It’s a fairly recent machine, and the battery report doesn’t show an obvious capacity problem.

What should I check first: whether it is truly powering off, a connected device drawing power, or a firmware setting? I’m trying to narrow down the cause before changing settings that might affect startup or battery life.
