# Why Did India and the United States Take Different Paths on Land Reform?

After independence, both India and the United States faced questions about land ownership and rural inequality, but their histories and political systems were very different. I’m trying to understand why land reform developed so differently in the two countries.

How much did colonial-era institutions, existing patterns of landholding, and the structure of government shape the policies each country pursued? I’m interested in a comparison that accounts for regional variation rather than treating either country as if it followed one uniform model.
