# Why Do Accounts of Ashoka’s Conversion to Buddhism Differ?

I’ve seen Ashoka’s turn toward Buddhism described as a sudden change after [the Kalinga war](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/114742/which-indian-emperor-converted-to-buddhism-after-the-kalinga-war-and-spread-it-widely), but other accounts make it sound gradual. How much of that difference comes from the sources we have, and how much from later writers shaping the story?

I’d especially like to understand what the edicts can tell us compared with Buddhist chronicles written later.
