# How Can I Tell Whether a Laptop Battery Drain Is Software-Related?

After a recent Windows update, my laptop battery seems to drain much faster, even when I’m doing the same work as before. The battery is a couple of years old, so normal wear is possible too, but I don’t want to replace it if a [background process](https://www.mindstick.com/blog/254/background-processing-in-android) is the real cause.

What’s a useful way to separate battery health problems from software-related drain? I can check the battery report and Task Manager, but I’m not sure which signs would point clearly in one direction.
