# Would holding national and state elections together make state issues easier to overlook?

When Lok Sabha and assembly elections happen at the same time, voters are asked to judge national and state governments in one campaign. I’m curious whether that makes it harder for local concerns—such as state services, farming or jobs—to get enough attention.

Could simultaneous elections make accountability clearer by reducing the number of campaigns, or might national issues dominate the discussion? What evidence from past elections or other countries would help assess the trade-off?

Yes, that is a real risk—but it is not automatic. When national and state elections happen at the same time, campaigns can become dominated by the national campaign narrative: the prime ministerial contest, national security, or the central government’s record. State-level policy debates, such as schools, local transport, or water supply, may get less attention.

The effect depends on how parties campaign and what voters hear. [Regional parties](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/117330/how-will-regional-parties-influence-the-2026-lok-sabha-outcome) can keep state issues in the conversation, and local media coverage can give voters room to compare candidates on state performance. Voters may also distinguish between their choices for national and state office, even when they cast ballots on the same day.

So the concern is less that state issues would disappear and more that they could receive less time and attention. Whether that happens would depend on campaign coverage, party strategy, and whether voters still get a clear chance to judge [state governments](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/111206/what-is-the-significance-of-state-governments-in-india) on their own record.
