# When does ChatGPT memory affect a reply more than custom instructions?

I’m trying to understand how ChatGPT decides what to carry from one conversation into another. If a saved memory points one way but my [custom instructions](https://yourviews.mindstick.com/view/user/650998/tom) say something different, which one is more likely to shape the response?

It would also help to know how this works in practice when memory is turned off, or when I want to remove one remembered detail without changing the rest of my setup.

ChatGPT memory can affect a reply when it contains relevant context from past conversations, while custom instructions provide broader preferences or rules. The practical difference is relevance: memory can personalize *what* is said, while custom instructions often influence *how* it’s said.
