# Can a Neutral Country Mediate Between Iran and the United States?

When Iran and the United States are not speaking directly, could a country with working relationships with both sides help mediate? I’m curious what makes an intermediary credible to each government, especially when public statements are hostile and neither side wants to appear to concede.

Does a mediator need formal approval from both parties, or can it begin by carrying limited proposals and building trust gradually?
