# What is the difference between Kafka and traditional message queues like RabbitMQ?

I'm preparing for an upcoming interview and keep seeing Kafka and [RabbitMQ](https://www.mindstick.com/interview/33987/what-is-rabbitmq) mentioned side by side. Beyond the obvious that Kafka is built for high-throughput streaming, I'm trying to understand the fundamental architectural distinctions that interviewers actually care about.

## Core Architectural Differences

RabbitMQ is fundamentally a message broker with a focus on routing and delivery guarantees. Kafka, on the other hand, is a distributed commit log. This means Kafka retains data for a configurable period, which changes how consumers interact with it.

### Delivery Semantics

- **RabbitMQ:** Typically emphasizes point-to-point or publish/subscribe patterns with strong delivery guarantees.
- **Kafka:** Optimized for throughput and sequential reads, often using a pull-based consumer model.

How does this log-based approach affect latency and replayability in real-world scenarios?
