**What actually happened in the Nepal flash floods and why is the death toll still rising a week later?**

## Answers

### Answer by Ashu Sharma ji

Nepal’s late-September 2024 disaster was not a single river overflowing. Exceptionally heavy rain over September 27–28 triggered sudden floods and landslides across several areas, including the Kathmandu Valley. Rivers such as the Bagmati and its tributaries rose quickly, while slopes gave way and buried homes and roads. By the first week of October, reported deaths had climbed above 230, though figures varied as officials updated their counts.

## Why was the damage so severe?

Several days of intense monsoon rain had left the ground saturated. The additional downpour then overwhelmed rivers and urban drainage, and Nepal’s steep terrain turned runoff into fast-moving floods and landslides. In the Kathmandu Valley, building and roads along river corridors left some communities especially exposed. On mountain highways, landslides and floodwater trapped vehicles and cut off routes used by rescuers.

The rain was unusually intense: some stations recorded more than 300 millimetres in a 24-hour period. That kind of concentrated rainfall can overwhelm drainage and destabilize slopes; it is more useful to describe it as an extreme rain event than to attribute this single disaster to climate change alone.

## Why did the death toll keep rising?

A rising toll a week later does not mean the flood was still killing people at the same pace. It largely reflects how difficult it was to establish what had happened. Roads were blocked, some affected places were hard to reach, and search teams needed time to find people reported missing. As they reached isolated communities and recovered bodies, authorities revised the count. Some early reports also counted confirmed deaths separately from people still missing, so totals could differ between updates.

In short, the disaster combined extreme rainfall with flash floods and landslides, while access problems delayed rescue and reliable casualty counts. The figures reported during that first week were provisional, not a final accounting.
