Meta titles and [meta descriptions](https://www.mindstick.com/blog/304968/implications-of-ai-generated-meta-tags-for-technical-seo) are the HTML [elements](https://www.mindstick.com/forum/1440/wpf-button-with-multiple-text-elements) that are featured in the head section of a webpage to explain the contents of a page to the [search engines](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/332055/list-of-ai-based-search-engines) and the user.

**A meta title** of a webpage, which appears in the [search engine](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/12599/search-engine-marketing-importance) results as the headline on which one can click, is known as the meta title (also referred to as the title tag). It informs the users and the search engines about what the page is about. As an example, a page about Java [programming](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/12214/web-development-company-in-india-laid-on-the-foundation-of-concrete-java-programming) tutorials may have the meta title as "**Beginner Java Programming Tutorial, Step by Step Guide**”. The meta title is a significant [ranking](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/339372/10-tips-to-boost-your-local-search-rankings) factor that search engines use since it assists them in determining the subject and relevance of the page. An effective meta title is short, precise, contains the key-words, and is often **50-60 characters** in order to not be truncated in the search results.

A **meta description** describes briefly the [content](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/12427/4-types-of-blog-phrases-that-keep-content-readers-engaged) of the webpage, usually displayed right below the meta title in the search engine results. It does not have a direct [impact](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/44109/the-importance-of-b2b-marketers-and-their-impact-on-the-company) on [rankings](https://www.mindstick.com/blog/303430/the-logic-of-seo-how-a-logical-site-structure-impacts-your-rankings), but it affects the click-through rates by prompting the users to visit the page. A good meta description should be **150-160 characters**, and it should reflect an interesting yet accurate overview of the contents of the page. Meta titles and meta descriptions, together, enhance the [SEO](https://www.mindstick.com/services/search-engine-optimization) and user interaction.
