They see people dying, their [friends](https://www.mindstick.com/articles/269450/15-ways-to-make-extra-money) getting hurt, and they are always under stress. Because of this, many soldiers feel scared, [sad](https://www.mindstick.com/blog/300906/what-is-smiling-depression), and sometimes angry even after the war is over. They can have nightmares, or they may remember the bad scenes again and again. This is called trauma. Some soldiers even feel guilty that they survived when their friends did not. [Civilians](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/40066/name-the-topmost-civilian-award-in-america), which means normal people who are not in the army, also suffer a lot. Their homes are destroyed, families get separated, and many lose their loved ones. This makes them very anxious and weak inside. Even if the war ends, they still feel afraid of loud noises or sudden changes. War also makes people angry or hopeless. Some never recover fully, and it can last for their whole life.
