# What is SSD in computers?

**SSD stands for solid-state drive. It is a type of storage device that uses flash memory to store data. Flash memory is a type of non-[volatile](https://www.mindstick.com/interview/1086/what-are-transient-and-volatile-modifiers) memory, which means that it retains data even when there is no power. SSDs are much** [**faster**](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/102314/what-is-ram-and-why-is-it-important) **than traditional hard disk drives (HDDs), which use spinning platters to store data.**

SSDs are becoming increasingly popular in [computers](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/102343/what-is-a-computer-power-button-used-for) because they offer a number of [advantages](https://www.mindstick.com/blog/300577/advantages-and-disadvantages-of-web-3-0) over HDDs, including:

- **Speed**: SSDs are much faster than HDDs. This is because SSDs can access data directly from [memory](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/102326/how-to-increase-ram-on-a-laptop), while HDDs have to spin the platters and move the read/write head to the correct position before accessing data.
- **Durability**: SSDs have no moving parts, which makes them more durable and less susceptible to shock damage than HDDs.
- **Noise**: SSDs are silent, while HDDs can generate a noticeable amount of noise.

- Faster file transfer speeds: Files can be transferred much faster between an SSD and other devices, such as an external hard drive or USB drive.
