# Getting Started with Claude Cowork: A Practical Step-by-Step Workflow

### Introduction

Theory is important, but the best way to learn [Claude Cowork](https://answers.mindstick.com/blog/436/claude-cowork-a-complete-guide-and-setup-tutorial) is by using it in a real project. Instead of asking random questions in a new chat every time, Claude Cowork encourages users to organize their work using [Projects, Skills](https://answers.mindstick.com/blog/438/projects-and-skills-in-claude-cowork), and [Artifacts](https://answers.mindstick.com/blog/435/claude-artifacts-memory-importing-and-pricing-plans-in-claude-cowork). This guide is here to help people who're new to Claude. It shows them how to do things in a way so they can make their first project with Claude. They can follow the steps, in this guide to build their project with Claude.

## Step 1: Create Project

Before starting any work, create a Project.

A Project keeps:

- Conversations
- Files
- Artifacts
- Context

organized in one place.

Example:

```plaintext
Portfolio Website  or  Calculator App
```

This helps Claude understand that all future conversations belong to the same project.

## Step 2: Add Project Knowledge (Optional)

If you already have:

- UI designs
- Requirement documents
- PDFs
- Images
- Existing code

upload them into the Project. This gives Claude more context before it starts working.

## Step 3: Create a Skill

Now create a Skill.

*Example:*

```plaintext
Frontend Web Developer
```

Instructions:

- Write clean code.
- Use responsive design.
- Follow best practices.
- Explain important changes.

Instead of repeating these instructions in every chat, Claude automatically follows them whenever the Skill is active.

## Step 4: Write Your First Prompt

Now tell Claude what you want to build.

*Example:*

```plaintext
Create a responsive portfolio website using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Include a Hero section, About section, Skills, Projects, and Contact page.
```

The clear prompt will help you to provide a better output.

## Step 5: Review the Artifact

Claude generates the project as an Artifact. Instead of scrolling through long messages, you can:

- Preview the project
- Read the generated code
- Edit the content
- Continue improving the same project

Artifacts act as your working workspace.

## Step 6: Improve the Project

Don't regenerate everything. Instead, improve the existing Artifact.

Examples:

- Improve the UI.
- Add dark mode.
- Make it mobile responsive.
- Optimize performance.

Claude updates only the required parts while keeping the rest of the project unchanged.

## Step 7: Export to VS Code

Once the project is ready you can ask Claude to organize the files.

*Example:*

```plaintext
Separate this project into HTML, CSS, and JavaScript files.
```

now you can copy the generated files into VS Code and continue development locally.

## Step 8: Continue the Workflow

As your project grows, continue using the same Project.

You can ask Claude to:

- Add new features
- Fix bugs
- Refactor code
- Generate documentation
- Review the project

Since Claude already knows the project context, future improvements become faster and more accurate.

## Best Practices

- Create one Project for every major application.
- Use Skills for repeated instructions.
- Generate large outputs as Artifacts.
- Keep all project files together.
- Improve existing Artifacts instead of starting over.
- Write clear and specific prompts.
