# What Is New in Grok 4.6 From xAI

On 12 August 2026, xAI released Grok 4.6, about a month after Grok 4.5. The company, which has since become part of SpaceX and now operates under the name SpaceXAI, positioned the new model for long-running agentic work, with particular strength in software prototyping and creating visual assets. Here is a clear look at what Grok 4.6 offers.

## Who makes Grok now

Grok was created by xAI, the AI company Elon Musk founded in 2023. In February 2026, SpaceX acquired xAI in a deal that valued the combined company at about $1.25 trillion. By July 2026, xAI was operating as SpaceXAI, a group that also includes the coding tool Cursor, which SpaceX acquired. The social network X also sits within the group, because xAI had acquired X in 2025.

The Grok brand continues, and Grok remains available in the Grok app, on grok.com and inside X.

## What Grok 4.6 is built for

xAI describes Grok 4.6 as a model for long-running agentic tasks. In plain terms, that means work where the AI needs to plan, take many steps, use tools and keep going for an extended period without losing track. Examples include building a software prototype from a description, iterating on code until tests pass, or producing a set of visual assets for a project.

## Key specifications

Based on reports at launch:

- **Context window:** 500,000 tokens, enough for long documents or substantial codebases.
- **Knowledge cutoff:** 1 February 2026, so it needs web search for anything more recent.
- **Pricing:** about $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens, with a faster edition at roughly double the price.
- **Availability:** same-day access through Cursor, xAI's own Grok Build tool and the xAI API.

The pricing is notable. At $2 and $6, Grok 4.6 costs considerably less than the most expensive frontier models, which makes it attractive for agent workflows that use many tokens.

## How it performs

Independent evaluator Artificial Analysis gave Grok 4.6 a score of 61 on its Intelligence Index at launch, which placed it level with OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol at the time and one point behind Anthropic's Claude Fable 5. On a separate agent-focused evaluation, it trailed Claude Opus 5.

Two cautions apply. First, these results come from Artificial Analysis's testing, and xAI had not published its full evaluation setup. Second, the AI landscape moves quickly. Since August, newer models have arrived, including OpenAI's GPT-6 family in September and Anthropic's Haiku 5.5 in October. Benchmark rankings shift with every release.

## Where you can use it

For developers, Grok 4.6 is available through the xAI API, which is designed to be largely compatible with OpenAI's request formats. That means existing applications can often test Grok 4.6 by changing the base URL, API key and model name.

It is also available in Cursor, the popular AI coding editor that is now part of the same company group. For developers who already use Cursor, this is the easiest way to try Grok 4.6 on real coding work.

xAI's Grok Build tool offers another route for building software with the model.

Everyday users can access Grok through the Grok app, grok.com and X. Which model you get in the consumer apps depends on your subscription, such as SuperGrok or X Premium tiers.

## Grok's distinctive strength

Beyond raw model capability, Grok's main point of difference remains its connection to X. Grok can search public posts on X in real time, alongside the wider web. This makes it useful for tracking breaking news, public reaction to events and trending discussions. It also means it can pick up rumours and misinformation during fast-moving stories, so verify important claims with reliable news sources.

## Who should consider Grok 4.6

**Developers building agents.** The combination of a large context window, agentic focus and moderate pricing makes it worth testing for multi-step workflows.

**Cursor users.** If you already work in Cursor, trying Grok 4.6 costs very little effort.

Teams needing real-time social data. Applications that track sentiment, trends or public discussion can benefit from Grok's access to X.

**Budget-conscious teams.** Its pricing is lower than many top models, though very cheap options such as DeepSeek V4-Flash, GPT-6 Luna and Claude Haiku 5.5 exist for simpler tasks.

## Things to keep in mind

- Test on your own work. Benchmark scores are a guide, not a guarantee.
- **Check data handling.** Review xAI's terms and privacy policy, especially for business data.
- **Review content behaviour.** Grok has historically been more permissive on some topics than other assistants, which may or may not suit your application. Add your own safety checks if needed.
- **Plan for change.** With new models arriving every few weeks, design your system so you can switch models easily.

## The bottom line

Grok 4.6 is xAI's model for long-running agentic work, offering a 500,000 token context window, competitive pricing and same-day availability in Cursor and the xAI API. It scored near the top of independent rankings at launch, though newer models from rivals have arrived since. For developers building agents, especially those already using Cursor, it is worth testing alongside alternatives. As always, let results on your own tasks guide your choice.
