# What GPT-6 Can Do With a One Million Token Context Window

One of the most striking specifications of OpenAI's GPT-6 family is its context window of roughly 1.05 million tokens. All three models, Astra, Sol and Luna, share it. The number sounds abstract, so it is worth unpacking what it actually allows you to do, and where its limits lie.

## What a context window is

A context window is the amount of text an AI model can consider at one time. Everything the model looks at when it writes a reply has to fit inside it: your instructions, the conversation so far, any documents you upload and the reply itself.

Context is measured in tokens, which are small pieces of words. In English, one token is roughly three-quarters of a word. So one million tokens is about 750,000 words.

How big is a million tokens?

To make that concrete, a million tokens could hold roughly:

- Several full-length novels at once.
- A company's entire set of policies, manuals and standard operating procedures.
- Thousands of pages of contracts or legal documents.
- A large software codebase, or a significant part of a very large one.
- Years of meeting notes or email threads.

Early chatbots in 2022 and 2023 could handle only a few thousand tokens, roughly a few pages. The jump to a million tokens changes what kinds of tasks are possible.

## Practical uses for very long context

**Whole-document analysis.** Instead of splitting a long report into chunks and asking about each piece separately, you can give the model the entire document and ask questions that depend on connections across sections. For example, you can ask whether a figure on page 40 contradicts a statement on page 300.

**Comparing many documents.** Upload several tender documents, research papers or vendor proposals at once and ask the model to compare them on specific criteria.

**Working with codebases.** Developers can give the model large parts of a project so it understands how different files connect. This helps with tasks like tracing a bug across modules or planning a large refactor.

**Long conversations and projects.** Long-running work sessions can keep more history in view, so the model is less likely to forget instructions and decisions made earlier.

**Legal and compliance review.** Lawyers and compliance teams can review long agreements or regulatory documents in a single pass, asking the model to list obligations, deadlines and risks.

**Research synthesis.** Researchers can load many papers and ask for common findings, disagreements and gaps.

## The output side: 128,000 tokens

GPT-6 models can also produce up to about 128,000 tokens of output in a single reply. That is roughly 96,000 words, enough for very long reports or large code files. In practice, most tasks do not need anywhere near that much output, but it removes the old problem of answers being cut off halfway.

## The limits you should know about

A bigger window does not automatically mean better answers. There are important caveats.

**Attention can drift.** Research and real-world experience show that AI models sometimes pay less attention to information buried in the middle of very long inputs. A model might technically accept a 2,000-page document and still overlook a key detail on page 900. For critical work, ask the model to quote the exact passages it relies on so you can check them.

**Cost grows with length.** With API pricing, you pay for every input token. Sending a million tokens with every request gets expensive quickly, especially on the most capable model. At published list prices, a single million-token input to GPT-6 Astra costs about $10 before any output, while the same input to Luna costs about $0.10.

**Speed slows.** Processing very long inputs takes more time, so responses can be noticeably slower.

Not always the right tool. If you have a huge library of documents and only need small parts of it for each question, retrieval systems, often called RAG, are usually cheaper and faster. They find the relevant sections first and send only those to the model.

## Tips for using long context well

Put your instructions after the documents. With very long inputs, placing your question near the end, close to where the model starts writing, often improves results.

**Label your documents.** Use clear separators and names, such as "Document 1: Supplier A proposal," so the model can refer to them precisely.

**Ask for citations.** Request page numbers, section names or direct quotes for important claims.

Use the cheapest model that works. For straightforward extraction across long documents, Luna may be enough. Save Astra for deep reasoning across the material.

**Use caching where available.** Many AI providers discount repeated input that has been cached, which helps when you ask many questions about the same large document.

## What this means for Indian businesses

For Indian businesses dealing with long documents, such as government tenders, legal agreements, compliance filings or large technical manuals, long context can save significant time. A tender running to hundreds of pages can be summarised, checked for eligibility criteria and compared with past bids in one session. The usual rule applies: verify key numbers and clauses against the original before acting.

## The bottom line

GPT-6's one million token context window means the model can read and reason over entire books, document collections or codebases in a single request. Used well, it unlocks analysis that once required hours of manual reading. Used carelessly, it can be slow, expensive and occasionally inattentive. Know when long context helps, check important details, and choose the right model tier for the job.
