12c Features :

Oracle Database 12c offers more than 500 new features along with a new multi-tenant framework that simplifies the task of consolidating databases in the cloud, helping customers in managing multiple databases in one single platform without altering their applications. Hundreds of pluggable databases can be hosted and managed by a single multi-tenant container, thereby reducing costs and making administration simpler. Oracle 12c also offers new database in-memory column store. This fastens the database queries and empowers businesses to make faster and better decisions.

In addition, Oracle 12c provides improved security features making companies to protect their mission-critical business information externally and internally with data reduction functionality to get rid of sensitive application data and a ‘privilege analysis’ capability to help users identify the applications with access controls or privileges within the database system.

12c Editions :

Keeping customers’ budget and functionality needs in into consideration, Oracle has made available Oracle database 12c in 3 editions :

Oracle Database Enterprise Edition offers unlimited CPU and memory usage (upto the OS maximum), along with Oracle Database 12c’s all features, though almost twenty of them - which include the Database and Multi-Tenant In-Memory technologies — are optional add-ons that must be purchased separately. List prices for the Enterprise Edition start at $90 for a Named User Plus license or $47,500 for a processor license.

Another option is Oracle Database Standard Edition which involves less cost along with less feature set for departmental applications or medium and small-sized businesses. Only on servers with four sockets as their maximum capacity, the Standard Edition can be licensed. A minimum of five licenses is required if in case Named User Plus licensing is utilized.

Oracle Standard Edition One is an entry-level offering that can be used only on servers with up to two sockets. The other primary difference between it and the Standard Edition is that it won’t offer support for automated workload management technologies and Real Application Clusters of Oracle.

12c OSes:

Oracle Database 12c is a heterogeneous RDBMS that runs on Unix, Linux and Windows operating systems and is supported cross over a range of hardware storage systems and servers. The supporting systems include Linux x86-64 and zLinux64, HP-UX Itanium, Oracle Solaris( for both x86 systems and SPARC), zLinux64 and IBM AIX(PPC64).

12c Licensing :

Oracle being the largest RDBMS vendor in the world offers both term and perpetual licenses. The license metrics used for ascertaining the cost of Oracle 12c purchases are based either on the number of processors the database runs on or on the number of named devices and users that have access to the application. Oracle licenses are sold directly by Oracle company or through its resellers. Oracle uses a mix of written agreements to license its products.

12c Data Types :

Besides supporting the standard numeric, date/time and character data types as all other RDBMS systems does, Oracle database 12c not only supports data types but also user-defined types. Users are also facilitated with the Oracle Exadata Database Appliance that provides an easy plug and plays a DBMS system. This database also provides configurations based on DBMS usage that consists of servers customized for data warehouse applications and online processing as well.
