Light therapy to end acne

Acne is a common dermatitis in adolescents. The led light treatment also called photobiomodulation offers excellent results to treat acne problems. It works during the infectious phase to dry comedones but also after treatment to improve skin quality and avoid scarring.

What is acne?

Acne is a dermatological pathology that mainly affects the skin of the face. It usually occurs in adolescents but may also occur during pregnancy. The comedones or pimples are due to an excess of sebum, usually of hormonal origin, which comes to clog the pores of the skin. Acne is caused by infection of these comedones with a bacterium called Propionibacterium acnes which causes inflammation of the tissues. If acne is not particularly serious, it is a very disabling disease that can cause depression and loss of self-confidence.

Light treatment to fight acne

Since acne is a bacterial disease, to treat it it it is necessary to eradicate the bacterium baccilliform that causes the lesions: Propionibacterium acnes. Completely painless, photobiomodulation can be used to supplement prescribed treatments without risk of side effects. It is a non-invasive method of applying colored light to the skin of the face. Numerous scientific studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of the wavelength corresponding to blue (450nm) as a natural treatment against acne. Light penetrates the skin inducing a different reaction depending on the color used.

The LED light treatment for acne is based on 2 colors according to the acne phase:

During the eruptive phase, you will first use the blue color for its antibacterial and antiseptic properties. The photobiomodulation will allow you to get rid of the bacteria responsible for acne, taking the problem at source. You will complete your session with a red led treatment to decrease the inflammation of the skin.

Once the skin is cleaned of the bacteria, the red Leds help to heal the lesions, thus limiting the unsightly scars. To cure an acne problem the joint use of blue and red during the same session is essential and guaranteed quick results.

How does it go?

The LED is applied a few centimeters from the face or the area to be treated: between less than a minute and up to half an hour depending on the type of light selected on a well cleansed and makeup-free skin. Solar exposure is not prohibited during treatment. Totally painless and without side effects, the sessions are spaced at least a week apart and the first effects are visible quickly. There will be 2 sessions per week in the first month and then 1 session per week for a total of approximately 12 sessions. After a few months, a second cure is possible to improve the result.

In pathology, the combination of LED treatments in the blue spectrum can bring a definite benefit as in acne for example. In an in vitro study, an anti-inflammatory effect by decreasing IL-1 and ICAM-1 and an anti-infective effect by increasing an LL-37 cathelicidin peptide was found to be added to the known effect of blue LED (405-420 nm) on Proprio bacterium acnes coproporphyrin III. These results were confirmed in vivo by the use of a single emitting device at 410 nm. The LED emitting in blue for the anti-infective property and in red for its anti-inflammatory property can provide a solution in case of therapeutic impasse.

What are the advantages of light therapy?

The LED light therapy allows to rehydrate and tone the skin in depth, to repair the skin damaged by the sun, tobacco, stress and come to soothe and strengthen in addition to laser care or peeling. The LED promotes the production of collagen by stimulating the activity of fibroblast cells in the dermis. The action of light on acne produces fast and lasting effects. It helps to erase all traces of acne.

It also allows to delay in time the effects of aging of the skin thanks to an action in depth. The result is improved skin quality, radiance and softness. The LED is an ideal complement to other aesthetic medicine techniques, such as botulinum toxin, hyaluronic acid, radio frequency, laser and pulsed intense light, peelings, etc.
