Sanskrit is a classical language of India which is considered to be one of the oldest languages in the world. But Sanskrit is very much alive and well in the 21st century. It's the official language of yoga, and can be heard in the names of popular brands like Nike and Pepsi. Sanskrit is also the source of many English words, including 'candelabra' and 'avatar.' 

One of the most famous Sanskrit phrases is 'Atithi devo bhava.' This phrase is often translated as 'guests are like gods.'

 But what does this phrase really mean? 

The word 'atithi' comes from the Sanskrit root 'ati,' which means 'beyond.' 'Devo' comes from the Sanskrit word 'deva,' which means 'god.' 'Bhava' comes from the Sanskrit root 'bhû,' which means 'to be.' So, 'Atithi devo bhava' can be literally translated as 'beyond god, be.' 

In other words, treat guests with the same respect and honor you would show a god. This phrase is more than just a polite way to welcome guests. It's a reminder that we are all connected. Everyone is deserving of our respect and kindness. When we treat guests like gods, we are reminded of our own divinity. We are reminded that we are all connected and that we all have the potential to be kind, compassionate beings.
