Why did Sonia Gandhi meet President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan?

Sonia Gandhi, the head of the Congress, met President Droupadi Murmu here on Tuesday. Following Murmu's election as president, this is the Congress President's first visit. 'President, Indian National Congress Sonia Gandhi called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan,' read a tweet from the President's Secretariat. Murmu is the nation's second female president and its first tribal leader. At the time of the election, the Congress opposed her candidacy and supported Yashwant Sinha, the united opposition candidate. This was a courtesy visit, according to sources in the Congress. On the eve of Independence Day, Murmu delivered her inaugural address, highlighting the success of Covid vaccinations, Atmanirbhar Bharat, and the expansion of the nation's economy following the epidemic.

Droupadi Murmu, also known as Puti Biranchi Tudu, was born on June 20, 1958, and has been India's 15th and current president since July 25, 2022. She is a Bharatiya Janata Party supporter. She is the second woman to hold the position after Pratibha Patil and the first member of a tribal community to do so.  She held a number of positions in the cabinet of the Government of Odisha between 2000 and 2004 before being elected president. She was the ninth governor of Jharkhand from 2015 to 2021. She worked as a teacher in Rairangpur till 1997 after serving as a clerk in the State Irrigation and Power Department from 1979 to 1983.

Murmu served as a junior assistant in the irrigation division of the Government of Odisha from 1979 to 1983. She then served as a teacher at the Sri Aurobindo Integral Education and Research Centre in Rairangpur from 1994 to 1997, where she imparted knowledge of Hindi, Odia, math, and geography. She never asked the school for her full wage. As an independent candidate for a seat designated for women in the Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat, Droupadi Murmu won the election in 1997.

She became India's president for the first time from one of the recognised tribal communities. She was the first person elected president who was both the youngest who was born after India gained independence in 1947. Only Pratibha Patil and Murmu have held the office of President of India.

In July 2022, a parliamentary delegation from Mozambique led by the assembly's speaker paid a visit to Rashtrapati Bhavan. After she took office, this was the first visit by a foreign delegation. Additionally, Murmu noted that 'India and Mozambique enjoy close, cordial ties, with frequent exchanges of high-level visits between the two nations.' On August 14, 2022, the night before the 76th Independence Day, President Murmu will address the nation.
