Sabarimala is a famous Hindu pilgrimage centre located in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala, a state in southern India. It is situated on the hills of the Western Ghats and is one of the most popular pilgrimage sites in India. 
The temple is dedicated to Lord Ayyappa, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu and a powerful guardian of the universe. The temple is located at an altitude of about 4,000 feet and is surrounded by dense forests, streams, and mountains. 

The origins of Sabarimala temple go back to the time of the Pandavas, who are believed to have visited this place during their exile. They are said to have built the temple here in honor of Lord Ayyappa. It is believed that Lord Ayyappa had appeared in the form of a Brahmin boy to protect the Pandavas from a demon king who was chasing them. The Pandavas then built a temple in honor of the deity, and this is where the present-day Sabarimala temple stands.

The temple is located on a hilltop, and it is surrounded by dense forest and hilly terrain. There are 18 holy steps that lead up to the temple, which is supposed to be taken by devotees as part of their pilgrimage. It is believed that taking these steps helps to purify one’s soul and mind and make one worthy of Lord Ayyappa’s blessings.

The most important festival celebrated at Sabarimala is the Makaravilakku, which is held in the month of Makaram, the Hindu month of January or February. During this festival, devotees from all over India gather at the temple to light the holy lamp called the Makaravilakku. Millions of devotees also take part in a procession to the temple, which is known as the Makaravilakku procession.
