One of the early webmail services was Hotmail. Sabeer Bhatia and Jack Smith founded Hotmail in 1996 in California. Microsoft bought the company in 1997 for $400 million and rebranded it as MSN Hotmail. The rebranding didn't end there; it was renamed Windows Live Hotmail before being renamed Outlook.com in 2013. As of 2014, Microsoft claims that the webmail had over 400 million active users.
