By far the most common is star topology. Each node in this framework is independently connected to a central hub via a physical cable, resulting in a star-like shape. Before reaching its destination, all data must pass through the central node. Because no two adjacent nodes are linked, if one fails, the others will continue to function. However, if the central node fails, all adjacent nodes in the network will fail as well.

Star topologies have the inherent advantage of allowing for the addition of new sites with ease; only the central site must be updated. The central site is critical in star topology; if it fails, all connections are lost. The performance of the connection is determined by the performance of the central hub.
