What is a phishing email?
  • Phishing is a type of social engineering in which an attacker sends a phoney (e.g., faked, fake, or otherwise deceptive) communication to trick a person into giving up important information or allowing dangerous software, such as ransomware, to be installed on the victim's infrastructure.
  • Phishing attacks have evolved to the point that they now often transparently mirror the site being attacked, allowing the attacker to watch everything the victim does while exploring the site and cross any extra security barriers alongside the victim. Phishing is by far the most widespread cybercrime as of 2020, with the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Centre logging more than twice as many phishing instances than any other type of computer crime.
