  • Microsoft created the WMV (Windows Media Video) as a compressed video container for the Windows Media framework. This container, which supports three different video codecs, can be used for online video streaming as well as sharing video material via HD DVD and Blu-ray Discs.
  • The original WMV codec was created as an online streaming alternative to the popular RealVideo codec. WMV Screen and WMV Image were later produced for specialised and physical content distribution. The 'Digital Rights Management (DRM)' element of the WMV format protects content from copyright infringement and unauthorised reproduction.
