What was the reason behind the creation of the internet?
  • The Internet was first created for military objectives before being broadened to allow scientists to communicate with one another. The invention was also influenced by the growing demand for computers in the 1960s. Having communications links between military and academic computers that were not affected by bombs or enemy agents was critical during the Cold War.
  • To address the issue, DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) hired BBN (Bolt, Beranek, and Newman) to construct ARPANET in 1968. (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network).
  • The invention of the telephone network led to the development of the Internet and the science of computer networking. The Internet, unlike the telephone network, uses packet switching. Three different independent research groups from around the world invented packet switching.
