  • DHCP is a hidden process that automates the assigning of IP addresses to wired and wirelessly linked fixed and mobile hosts.
  • When a device wishes to connect to a DHCP-enabled network, it sends a request for an IP address, which is answered by a DHCP server. The server responds by giving the device an IP address, then monitoring its use and returning it after a set period of time or when the device shuts down. The IP address is subsequently returned to the DHCP server's pool of addresses, where it will be reassigned to another device seeking network access.
