  • A brouter is a device that serves as a bridge and a router at the same time. It may both forward data between networks and route data to specific systems within a network (acting as a bridge) (serving as a router).
  • A bridge's primary function is to connect two distinct networks. It merely moves incoming packets from one network to another. A router, on the other hand, is more sophisticated since it can route packets to specific systems that are linked to it.
  • A brouter combines these two functions by routing some incoming data to the appropriate systems while sending the rest to a different network. In other words, a brouter acts as a filter, allowing some data into the local network while sending unidentified data to another network.
