  • A network is made up of two or more computers that are linked together to share resources (such printers and CDs), exchange files, and allow electronic communication. A network's computers can be connected by cables, phone lines, radio waves, satellites, or infrared laser beams.
  • A LAN (Local Area Network) is a network that is limited to a local area. It's usually restricted to a specific location, such as a writing lab, school, or building.
  • Servers and workstations are two types of computers that are connected to a network. Servers are typically not used directly by humans, but rather run in the background to deliver 'services' to other computers (and their human users) on the network.
  • Wide Area Networks (WANs) link networks across greater geographic areas, such as Florida, the United States, or the entire globe. This form of global network might be connected using dedicated transoceanic cabling or satellite uplinks.
