'Macis probably more secure overall since Apple has complete control over both hardware and software, whereas Windows must be modified to a wide range of brands and models,' Bischoff noted.
'This, along with the fact that fewer people use Macs, means there are more security holes in Windows that are detected more rapidly.'
F-Secure’s Aurora said that, while Apple's security marketing implies that Macs are more secure, consumers should not become comfortable - especially given the larger value placed on hacking Apple devices.
'To begin with, Macs are considered more safe than Windows devices, and as a result, users are sometimes encouraged to be complacent when it comes to installing security software and other monitoring, and there is less competition from other crooks,' Aurora said.
