  • A real-time system is one that is subjected to real-time constraints, i.e., the response must be assured within a specific time constraint or the system must fulfil a deadline. For instance, flight control systems, real-time monitors, and other similar devices.
  • System that operates in strict real-time: This type of system is incapable of missing a deadline. Failure to meet the deadline could have devastating effects. If tardiness grows, the usefulness of results generated by a hard real-time system drops abruptly and may even become negative.
  • Soft real-time system: This type of system can occasionally miss its deadline with a low likelihood. There are no dire implications if you miss the deadline. With increasing tardiness, the utility of findings generated by a soft real-time system rapidly decreases.
