Nasa has revealed plans to decommission the International Space Station (ISS) in 2031. After hundreds of missions since 1998 to get the station into orbit, taking it down would be an achievement in and of itself, with catastrophic consequences if things go bad. Nasa's intentions for the dismantling procedure will climax in a blazing drop into the Pacific Ocean at a place known as Point Nemo, often called the spaceship cemetery, the farthest location from any civilization.

Identifying the Point Nemo will be the penultimate stop in a difficult and multi-staged mission to transition the ISS's functions to new commercial space stations and safely return the surviving structure to Earth. The International Space Station (ISS) has outlived all predictions, despite being commissioned for a 15-year lifetime. It has already been in service for 21 years, and Nasa has granted permission for another decade, tripling its entire projected duration in orbit.
