The
AFC Women's Asian Cup 2022 will be contested in
India from
January 20 to February 6, with twelve nations competing for the famous trophy. The
20th edition of the
AFC Women's Asian Cup trophy is significant for India because it is the
nation's second time hosting the event after 1979.
The
AFC Women's Football Committee offered India as the match's host, and India was selected in
June 2020. The nation is
hosting the
tournament for the second time, the previous being in 1979. The final tournament was increased from
eight to twelve teams for the first time in the
competition. It is the penultimate stage of
Asians qualifying for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, which Australia has already competed for as a co-host. 5 teams would qualify for the
World Cup directly through the knockout stage, while two more will go to the
inter-confederation play-offs. Japan is the two-time reigning champion, however they were
ousted in the semi-finals on penalties by
China PR. China PR proceeded to win the
championship, their eighth overall, by overcoming
South Korea 3–2 in the finale.
