The current chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is S Somanath. He was appointed to the position on January 14, 2022. Somanath is an expert in launch vehicle design and has specialized in the following areas: launch vehicle systems engineering, structural design, and structural dynamics. He has over 35 years of experience in the space sector, and has held various positions at ISRO, including Director of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) and Director of the Space Applications Centre (SAC).

Somanath is a recipient of the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian award in India. He is also a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering and the Indian Academy of Sciences.

As chairman of ISRO, Somanath is responsible for the overall planning and execution of the organization's space programs. He is also responsible for representing ISRO at national and international forums.
