The Nalanda University which was located in Bihar, was the world’s oldest university in excellent learning and a completely residential university for 2000 teachers and 10000 Buddhist students. It existed from 427 to 1197 BCE.
Built in the 5th century by Gupta ruler Kumargupta-I, it is one of the most ancient site of learning.

It had excellent architecture and Emperors like Ashoka and Harshvardhana built various other temples, viharas and monasteries in its premises. It had seen many visitors like Gautam Buddha who visited here multiple times and Hieun Tsang, who wrote elaborated accounts of this university regarding its architecture, excellent education system and pure monastic life.

Destruction of Nalanda:
The university was destroyed by Turkish invader Bakhtiyar Khilji in 1202 A.D. when he got envious of the excellence in education here. He was being treated by an Acharya who was the HOD of Ayurveda in Nalanda. When he treated him without any medication (as per Khilji’s order), he became aggressive and envious that how come an Indian physician possess more knowledge than his own. Therefore, he completely destroyed the university.
The ruins of Nalanda are still located in Bihar. Infact what we see now are only the ruins of our great heritage Nalanda. Apart from these Nalanda museum and Nava Nalanda Vihar are other tourist sites.
