Bal Gangadhar Tilak or Lokmanya Tilak started the two newspaper The Maratha and The Kesari. The Kesari newspaper was founded in 1881 in Marathi language and The Maratha was started in the English language. The newspaper was started and was used as a spokes piece for the Indian national freedom movement. The newspaper was started as the result of the cooperation of Chiplunkar, Agarkar, and Tilak.

Bal Gangadhar Tilak was born in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra on day 23 July 1856. After completion of his Bachelors in Arts in 1877, he opted for L.L.B course and 1879 obtained his L.L.B degree from Government Law College. Tilak joined the Indian National Congress in 1890. He was the biggest radical at that time. Tilak tried to convince Mohandas Gandhi to leave the idea of Total non-violence ("Total Ahimsa") and try to get self-rule ("Swarajya") by all means.
