Iltutmish was the famous Delhi Sultanate ruler who introduced two coins that became the basis for the subsequent coinage of the Delhi Sultanate: the silver tanka and the copper jital. Shams ud-Din Iltutmish was the first Muslim sovereign ruler of Medieval India. He was born in the month of the year 1211, his birth date is not specified but some historians said he was born around 17 or 18th June.

He was always known for out of the box "reformations" in his royal court. When the state's economy was at the declining stage then he was the one who came with the unique idea of using new coins in place of the old coins which were made up of silver and gold. The reason for this was that silver and gold coins were scarce and quite expensive for the general populace's use.

He was a devoted Sunni Muslim but it is said that he was against converting the Kafirs (non-Muslims) like Hindus, Jains and Sikhs. Now he used to consult with the orthodox ulema but never took their fatwas (Islamic clerical advisory) into account while implementing his imperial policy. One such was the example of using "Silver Tanka" and "Copper Jital" coins as the official medium of coinage.
