What did Italians call Ellis Island?
The ‘Ellis Island’ has been considered as the busiest immigrant inspection station of the United States for more than 60 years, from 1892 to 1954. The island was made part of the Museum of the Statue of Liberty National Monument in 1965. The museum of immigration was inaugurated in the year 1990. The Italians called the island as “The Island of Hope and Tears”, as well as by other peoples too. The reason for this name is that that was the only place from where many peoples dream came true and also many peoples dream destroyed as well.
It is the only place where immigrants from all over the world came with a dream to start a new life. Whereas, many people came with different reasons as well, such as War, Economic Issues, Corrupt Government, and many more. The Italian people came to the United States worked and earned money and even send money to their relatives at their home place. So, in 1896, the government of commission of Italian Immigration estimated that Italians immigrants sent and took home money is approximately $4 Million to $30 Million each year. This earning of money from the United States has marked an increase in the wealth of many sections of Italian people who received money from their family men who were working in the United States.
