Recovery mode restore is frequently the key to resolving software issues that defy standard troubleshooting approaches such as a forced restart and reset.

  • Use the Apple-supplied USB connection or Lightning cable to connect your iPhone X to a Windows or Mac computer.
  • On your PC, launch iTunes. Make sure you're using the most recent version of iTunes.
  • While your iPhone is connected, use the following steps to force it to restart:
  • Quickly press and release the Volume Up button.
  • Then, swiftly push and release the Volume Down button.
  • Finally, hold the Side (Power) button down. Wait for the Recovery Mode screen instead of releasing the button when you see the Apple logo.
If you're given the choice of restoring or updating, choose Update. If you do so, iTunes will attempt to restore iOS without wiping your data and will download the appropriate software for your device.
If the download takes longer than 15 minutes, your iPhone will exit recovery mode, and you'll have to repeat the process to go back into recovery mode.
