TCP/IP networks may be divided into three categories. Each class makes varied use of the 32-bit IP address space, giving the network element of the address more or fewer bits. Class A, B, and C are the three categories.

class A group of people. The 'network component' of an IP address is comprised of the first eight bits. The host component of the IP address takes up the remaining 24 bits.
class B network number has a network number of 16 bits and a host number of 16 bits.
Class C network numbers have a network number of 24 bits and a host number of 8 bits.
